Résumé :
|
When Richelieu was born, in 1585, France existed only as a geographical area - loyalties were feudal, religious or regional and the country was not united by language or law. Armed with a ruthless determination and steely intelligence, the young Richelieu ingratiated himself with Marie de Médici, was made a cardinal in 1622, and by 1624 became the first minister of Louis XIII's council. Thereafter he concentrated on the pursuit of power and wealth and on the cultivation of a unified nation.
