Manit Sriwanichpoom was born on September 27th, 1961. After studying visual arts in Bangkok, he took up photography, and since the mid- 1990's has painted a bitter, critical portrait of Thai society, both during the economic boom and after its collapse. His work includes a series of photos of unfinished buildings in the heart of Bangkok, and another in modern-day Thailand in which "actors" recreate scenes from some of the most famous photos taken during the Vietnam war. He has also created a character called "Pink Man", (interpreted by the writer Sompong Thawee), who personifies the new Thai businessman : he is shown busily pushing his (pink) shopping trolley from one place to another, his mobile phone constantly in his hand, totally insensitive to the world is a mix of surrealist poetry, bitter social comment and melancholic humanism, on which History has left its indelible mark.
